Dream (11/15/2018): saying goodbye to a very smart parrot

Posted by

We were getting ready to fly home that afternoon, and were busy saying our goodbyes.

I ended up talking with a parrot about the psychological concept of object permanence—the idea that things may still exist even when they’re not seen or heard—and how this sometimes manifests in animals and people.

At the end of our conversation I said to the parrot that it was very nice having such an intelligent conversation, and it thanked me by squawking an exact audio recording of my own voice saying ‘thank you’, taken from the end of my last voicemail.

We walked out toward the beach one last time. We were nearly there when the waves began coming in strong. Water crashed around the trees and the house behind where I had ducked, but I had lost sight of you in the swirling chaos.

I heard you scream my name as the sea rose around us.
